Learning
At our school, we teach the NSW curriculum across all key learning areas. We know that the development of skills in communication, literacy and numeracy are the building blocks for learning and life. Our teachers use effective teaching strategies to cater for the complex learning needs of our students to help them achieve their goals.
What students learn
Students learn a wide range of subjects in the NSW curriculum. They build foundational skills for learning and for life.
All students attending NJS have an Individual Learning Plan (ILP). An ILP is developed in collaboration with teachers, parents and caregivers and support staff that may include Allied Health professionals. Using a strengths-based approach, the ILP contains three learning goals that will be explicitly taught, monitored, assessed and reported on twice a year. They supplement curriculum learning and build foundational skills. Goals may be centered around developing learning and participation skills, communication, social and emotional wellbeing, physical skills, self care routines, transition and other essential skills for life.

At NJS we use the Literacy and Numeracy Precursors to guide teaching and learning in classrooms. Using the NJS Precursor Diagnostic tool, teachers can pinpoint where students are in their literacy and numeracy development and use explicit instruction to support student learning. Precursors describe the skills, understandings and or capabilities students may need to establish a strong foundation for literacy and numeracy concepts.

All Aboriginal students have a cultural goal added to their Individual Learning Plans. This is a focus area to develop through cultural activities and supported during our Deadly Juniors Program.

NJS recognises the potential in all students. The school provides regular opportunities for students to develop their potential across the domains of learning, physical, social/emotional and creative.
