Our extra-curricular highlights

Community Access

Using the school owned, wheelchair accessible buses, classes can plan excursions to various locations in our community. The aim of the program is for students to build on their social interaction skills, develop independence and to practise safely accessing their local community. This program may supplement learning in the classroom by visiting local parks, wildlife centres and areas of interest. Community access also focuses on individual learning goals and functional life skills to support students to be safe and active participants in their local community.

Deadly Juniors

The Deadly Juniors Program is a weekly opportunity for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to connect as a group to engage in cultural games and activities. Students have a space dedicated to their work and their achievements are celebrated throughout the year through events, cultural recognition days and fun activities with our Middle and Senior School.

Integration

NJS is fortunate to share borders with Hillsborough PS. This year, selected students from NJS have combined with 2/3G (Hillsborough PS) in a range of class and playground activities. They play games, build on social interaction and play skills as well as learning about inclusive practices, empathy and kindness. A highly valuable experience for all involved.

Sport

Community coaches are employed each term to deliver sporting programs for our students. Activities such as soccer, tennis, gymnastics and touch football have been a great opportunity for students to develop fundamental skills and have some fun!

High Potential and Gifted Education

Our school aims to recognise, foster and develop emerging skills so all students can reach their potential. Using a strengths based approach, students are afforded regular opportunities to develop their potential across all domains including music groups, community coaches for sport, art shows and school concert.

Transition

NJS has well established transition processes for students starting and leaving our school specifically those transitioning to Newcastle Middle School. This enables information to be clearly communicated to ensure smooth transition occurs for each student.
