At Newcastle Junior School we run a number of programs.

Sport Program

The Sporting Schools Program provides specialised funding through the Australian Sports Commission for schools to run programs based on physical activities. The school is able to hire specialised coaches to work closely with our students to develop fundamental movement skills that is important for our early learners. 

Students enjoy this program and gain useful skills that contribute to their development and well being. In past years our students have taken part in activities such as:

  • gymnastics
  • multiskills
  • fitness
  • Zumba
  • Boccia
  • Yoga 
  • Tai Chi.

Riding for the disabled

Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) provides opportunities for anyone with a disability to enjoy safe, healthy stimulating, therapeutic, horse-related activities.

RDA enables our students to experience enjoyment, challenge and a sense of achievement through participation in equestrian activities to improve their quality of life, attain personal goals and develop life skills.

RDA is accessed primarily by our year 3 students and is run by the trained and caring volunteers of the Riding for the Disabled Association. 


Newcastle Junior School is unique in that our school campus borders the local primary school Hillsborough Public School.  Students are selected and targeted for this program which involves weekly visits to our neighbour school's playground, classrooms or library sessions.

The social aspect, role modelling and buddy system is beneficial to our students in developing their social skills. We continue on building this relationship with the school and have seen improvements in not only our students but our mainstream counterparts through this program.


We understand the importance of technology for our twenty first century learners and has extensive resources such as - iPads, interactive whiteboards, switches, computers and other technologies that are used every day in our classrooms as tools to support learning and development.

The availability of this technology has improved learning outcomes and experiences by breaking down the barriers of accessibility for our students.

We continuously seek professional development opportunities that focussed on using technology in the classroom. This ongoing focus has resulted in our school being a Centre of Best Practice in using iPads to support all aspects of student learning.
